Top 10 Tips for Maintaining Your Sobriety (and Sanity!) Post-Election
It might be tempting to pick up a drink to numb the emotions of the news of the U.S. Presidential Election. After all, alcohol is a numbing agent, and it would be really effective! 😊
So in light of the election news, I put together list of Top 10 Tips to Maintain your Sobriety (and Sanity!), today and beyond! I hope this is helpful to those who are experiencing some tough emotions from the news.
1️⃣ Be sure to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and caffeine-free beverages throughout the day. Alcohol is off limits today! It will only make your anxiety worse tomorrow. I guarantee it.
2️⃣ Make a list of things you are grateful for. Focusing on the positives can be a game-changer for your mindset.
3️⃣ Get out your journal. Writing can help you process difficult emotions.
4️⃣ Put on a happy song and dance in your living room. Happy music and dancing gives you an immediate boost of endorphins and dopamine.
5️⃣ Take your dog for a walk! And if you don't have a dog, just take yourself out for a walk. It has multiple benefits from a brain chemistry standpoint: Sunshine gives you a serotonin boost; and you get endorphins from the exercise. Photo of Tucker and me attached for an added smile :-)
6️⃣ Soak in a hot tub (or bath). This can release oxytocin and make you feel relaxed.
7️⃣ Do some gentle stretching, yoga or meditate. This can also make you feel relaxed with an added oxytocin boost.
8️⃣ Eat small amounts of protein throughout the day. This can help control cravings to drink.
9️⃣ Connect with friends and family members. Texting doesn't count -- real conversations are what matter. Having someone to vent to can be helpful, as is lending an empathetic ear to those who might be struggling right now.
🔟 Laughter! Find something -- anything -- to make you laugh. A real belly laugh can immediately boost your mood.
