My Interview on the “Alcohol Free Life” Podcast!

I had the honor and privilege of being interviewed by Sober Rockstar, Janey Lee Grace, (founder of The Sober Club) on her Alcohol Free Life podcast this morning! What a cool opportunity to spread the word about CliftonStrengths for Sobriety, and my "Superpower Squared" coaching approach to Reach New Heights in your life!

As a brief reminder, your CliftonStrengths describe how you get things done, analyze information, build relationships, and influence others.

Some strengths can help you on this journey, and some may get in the way of your sobriety goals. In the interview, Janey and I discussed a few examples of how CliftonStrengths can be used in sobriety. Some additional stories are added for this blog post.

  • COMPETITION loves to win! If you're someone with high Competition talents, turn your "not drinking experiment" into a game or contest. For those with dominant Competition talents, this is a game that you’ll be sure to win! One of my Executive Coaching clients with high Competition talents bet his wife (after she had expressed concern about his drinking) that he wouldn’t drink for a YEAR! This was a bet his Competition talents would definitely not lose — and he won the bet in 2020, of all years!

  • FUTURISTIC talents can help you create a vividly imaginable future that can inspire and motivate you. If you have high Futuristic talents, spend some time really imagining what "Freedom from Alcohol" looks like to you. You will be able to leverage this talent to keep you reaching for that future.

  • LEARNER loves to learn! Don't just stop drinking for 30 days to prove you 'don't have a problem.' Invest in an alcohol-free challenge with a learning component (consider joining mine!) so you gain new knowledge along the way.

  • MAXIMIZER is energized by adding bells and whistles and turning something ordinary into exceptional. It can also lead to perfectionism, so if you have a 'slip up' on this sobriety journey, don't be too hard on yourself. Progress over perfection!

  • ACHIEVER feels accomplished by reaching goals and milestones. If you set a 30-day goal and nailed it, raise the bar to 90 days!

  • CONNECTEDNESS is a talent that is all about building bridges and believes everything happens for a reason; there are no coincidences. Joining an on-line sobriety community (or in Janey’s case, creating one with Connectedness #9!) may be the missing link in your journey, to make connections with others on this sober path.

  • If you're looking for true freedom from the “Wine Witch” that keeps calling your name, you may be able to get there easier and faster by tapping into your strengths to help guide your journey. (I can help with this!)

  • If you're just sober curious and thinking about taking a break from alcohol, learning more about your strengths can help you in many areas of your life!

  • Either way, if you want to learn more, consider signing up for my next group workshop: "CliftonStrengths for Sobriety" on December 14, 2023.
